De Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam

(2 Ratings)
Very old church reinvented as an arts venue

A 15th-century church hit badly by fire but then rebuilt in the 17th century, with a neo-gothic makeover from the late 19th, followed in 1979 as a full-throttle re-imagining as an exhibition space and, in summer, a concert venue for daily midday organ recitals. Exhibitions are ambitious and often international, previously showcasing art in all forms from Indonesia, Istanbul, Afghanistan, Morocco and Oman, plus native Americans, Rembrandt and others. Also suitable for coronations, abdications and weddings, including the 2002 ceremony uniting the present King and Queen and his investiture in 2013. Located a ten-minute walk from Central Station, with visitor entrance via the Dam.
