Angel of Amsterdam
One of the defining gay establishments in the Zeedijk (and Amsterdam, for that matter), the Engel is a casual but buzzy pocket-sized bar that attracts an ever so slightly older crowd of bears and regular guys, with occasional frissons from black leather. Opened in 2006 by partners Paul and Andre, this former UK-style drinking hole sits on a corner in the part of the Zeedijk just before the start of Chinatown and the red light district (assuming you're coming at it from the Warmoesstraat end). The corner position allows for not one but two outdoor drinking and smoking areas, with the space out front particularly close-up and personal. Features include weekend DJs, game shows and monthly drag performances. Sunday late afternoons and early evenings are a thing, with guys often taking the rest of their drinks stash on to the Web afterwards. Sadly the bar closed in 2015.
