The Life and Times of A. Palulu

Graag nodigt Glubbdubdrib je uit op 29 juni van 17.00-19.00 uur voor de tweede expeditie 'The Life and Times of A. Palulu' in de Artis Bibliotheek. Wat weten wij van de Ampuku Palulu? En wat kunnen wij van hem leren? Voor haar invloedrijke Surinaams Insectenboek uit 1705 werkte de Duitse kunstenares en entomologe Maria Sibylla Merian op een plantage in het Surinaamse binnenland. Deze in Amsterdam woonachtige onderzoekster tekende daar als eerste insecten samen met de plant waar ze op gedijden. Hiermee liet ze zien dat insecten niet uit klei voortkwamen en verbeeldde ze de wonderbaarlijke metamorfose van rupsen. Dit invloedrijke boek was niet tot stand gekomen zonder gebruik te maken van de kennis van lokale Indianen en Afrikaanse slaven. Samen met etnobotanica Tinde van Andel gaan wij op deze tweede expeditie onderzoeken wat het Surinaamse plantenrijk ons kan vertellen over ons Surinaamse en koloniale geheugen, geschiedenis en cultuur. Hoe kwam kennis van Surinaamse planten vroeger tot stand? Hoe herkenden Surinamers de planten, hoe werd kennis daarvan verspreid? Zijn de medicinale eigenschappen van planten uit de tijd van Merian nog steeds bekend? Sabrina Lisse Venetiaan en Jurman Blackson van Jursu Kultura zullen een aantal gedroogde Surinaamse planten tonen uit hun winkel en het gebruik hiervan toelichten. Kunstenaar Lotte Geeven ontvouwt een speculatieve geschiedenis van magische en transformerende beelden in een zoektocht naar de oorsprong van de afbeeldingen uit het boek Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium. De reeks onderzoekt samen met kunstenaars, wetenschappers en het publiek hoe ervaring, uitbeelding én catalogiserende beschrijvingen van de natuur functioneren. Tegelijkertijd wordt de vraag gesteld hoe de relatie tussen mens, dier en de natuurlijke omgeving zich in het verleden en heden manifesteert. Hoe komt kennis over de natuur tot stand? Hoe wordt deze in kaart gebracht? Een samenwerkingsproject van Claire Weeda (universitair docent middeleeuwse geschiedenis aan de Universiteit Leiden) en Yeb Wiersma (beeldend kunstenaar), die hiervoor de stichting Glubbdubdrib oprichtten. Palulu’, which will take place in the Artis Library on June 29th, from 17.00 until 19.00 hours. What do we know about the Ampuku Palulu? And what can he teach us? For her breathtaking Surinaams Insectenboek dating from 1705, German artist and entomologist Maria Sibylla Merian worked on a plantation in the interior of Suriname. This remarkable scientist, who for a while lived in Amsterdam, was the first researcher to sketch insects together with the plants that they feed on. In her drawings she demonstrated that insects did not evolve from clay, and she reconstructed the remarkable metamorphism of caterpillars. This influential book could not have been realized without using the extensive knowledge of local Indians and African slaves. On our second expedition we will examine, under the guidance of ethnobotanist Tinde van Andel, what the Surinamese plant world can teach us today about our Surinamese and colonial memory, history and culture. How did knowledge of Surinamese plants evolve in the past? How were plants recognized, and how was the knowledge thereof disseminated? Are the medicinal and ritual properties of the plants from Merian’s time still known today? Sabrina Lisse Venetiaan and Jurman Blackson from Jursu Kultura will show us some dried plants from Suriname and tell us about their uses. Artist Lotte Geeven will take us on a journey in search of the source images of Merian’s Surinaams Insectenboek. During this evening she will unfold a speculative history of true magic and morphing images over time.
