Van Gogh Museum

(16 Ratings)
World's most comprehensive Van Gogh collection

The most visited museum in the Netherlands houses the works of iconic Dutch post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh (1853–90) and his contemporaries, including Manet, Monet, Gaughin, Seurat, van Dongen, Redon and Rodin. Needless to say, the museum's 200 paintings, 400 drawings, and 700 letters by van Gogh constitutes the world's largest van Gogh collection. The museum was founded as recently as 1973, opening well after the death of its designer Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888–1964). Check website for convoluted seasonal opening hours.

Hours
Jan to early Nov: 9am—6pm daily. Early Nov to mid-Dec: Mon to Fri 9am—5pm Sat and Sun 10am—6pm. Mid- to late-December: 9am—6pm daily

The majority of Van Gogh's works have never left the Netherlands, and this is where they are now housed. Designed by Gerritt Reitveld, this building allows the natural light to flow inside as the great works are beautifully displayed as they should be. The earlier, darker works from his time in the mines is there, as are the self-portraits and pieces from his Asian Period, his Pointallism Period, and those magnificent pieces as his illnesses and troubles affected his works. Order your tickets online, because they are timed. Also, this way, you avoid the crowds. Nice coffee shop and a decent gift shop as well.

World's Largest Collection of Van Goghs

The Van Gogh Museum is a manageable size museum even for people who don't like art museums. I found it enlightening to stroll through and note the various categories of Van Gogh's work, including drawings, landscapes, portraits and still lifes. I was previously unaware of how Impressionistic his early landscapes were. The degree of Van Gogh's psychosis also becomes apparent as you observe the changes is his works as he gets older. This is a fascinating museum, and I highly recommend it.
