Montmartre (aka Café Le Montmartre de Paris) Formerly: Chez Tonie

The most frequented and award-winning of all the Amstel watering holes, Montmartre takes its inspiration from the fabulousness and naughtiness of 1920s Paris (but with a local Dutch feel). A massive mural evokes the era, with references to the city's landmarks, Josephine Baker and the jazz scene. At ceiling height disco balls and big and puffy pink and white flowers push the camp thing to its welcomed limits. Gets busy and buzzy, with absolutely no room in which to swing a cat, though there's a tiny dance floor. Music = Eurovision, 70s, 80s and 90s chart hits, Dutch pop and today's hits. Attracts a slightly older crowd (forties, fifties) in the early evening, supplanted by the younger set as the night progresses. Monthly bingo nights. Opened in 1964 (as Chez Tonie), with a new owner and new French bar name from 1982. Montmartre is run by Oscar Rookhuijzen, previously with Diana Hunselaar, who died in 2017, and longtime co-owner Demian Cortie, who died in August 2019, aged 37. Located just opposite Entre Nous, seconds from the north-east corner of Rembrandtplein. Now closed Monday.
