One of the city's more swish options, this address has operated as a hotel only since 1992, before which it was a 15th-century convent, royal lodgings, Dutch Admiralty headquarters and, in the 180 years leading up to 1992, the City Hall. The stately, classical facade belies the smart, playful and modern-thinking interior, the work of French designer Sybille de Margerie. The Grand offers "Dutch hospitality à la française", not to mention room styles and decors to accommodate several different sensibilities. In short, a grand hotel that refuses to be pigeonholed. The spa and wellbeing facilities take up two floors, with other features including the popular Bridges restaurant (five-, six- and seven-course menu options), Oriole Garden Bistro, cocktail bar and banqueting facilities, including the former council chamber where in 1966 Queen Beatrix married Claus van Amsberg. Location is exemplary no matter in which gay direction you go.
