Situated across from the Central Station and literally within earshot of both the Warmoesstraat and the Zeedijk, the NH Barbizon Palace serves as one of the Spanish chain's 12 Amsterdam's outlets. The 274-room complex started life as 17 very old houses, which in the 1980s the Golden Tulip transformed into one big and splashy hotel as part of efforts to give the area a lift. In the late 1990s the NH chain started its takeover of the 'Palace', with minimal changes to the 80s decor. In early 2016 the hotel got a much-needed facelift. Owing to the unusual nature of the 17 buildings' reinvention, many of the rooms involve a few steps going up or down to a second level, with original and reassuringly massive ceiling beams providing an eye-catching and atmospheric distraction. Includes a Michelin-starred restaurant, Vermeer.
