Gay hotel with the motto "sleep with us"
A welcoming eight-room, gay-owned and gay-managed hotel with a gay history going back to the 1970s under previous owner Herman, whose then-named West End Hotel offered the gay traveller a reliable, budget and basic experience. Under new ownership the hotel reopened in 2001, reinvented with modernised facilities and now overseen by a dedicated and on-site team of four men. Prices are near-budget and include a generous self-service breakfast, eggs and all, available until 1pm, which can be oh so convient for certain aspects of a gay lifestyle. The ground-floor breakfast room replaces the popular late-20th-century Cosmo Bar. The location is another bonus, and each room is fitted with a computer. As gay-specific Amsterdam hotels go, the Amistad is a rarity, and the name translates as 'friendship' in Spanish.

      Very friendly staff
The hotel is typical for old Europe, not very big. We had a room with our own bathroom which always comes in handy when you don't get home from drinking til 4am!!! The staff at Amistad was great. Michael or Rick cooked some really good breakfasts for us (included with stay). It was walking distance to most everything and there were a few gay bars/clubs right on the same street. Go to Church Bar if you want to have fun (by fun I mean..sex). I don't know why they just don't call it a sex club! This was my third time to Amsterdam and my first stay at Amistad. Definitely recommend it...

      Nothing special
This hotel is a pretty good walk (20+ minutes) from most of the gay nightlife. To try to overcome this deficiency, the staff suggests only one club, which happens to be only about 25 meters from the hotel. The shared bathrooms were not great (the toilet room had no heat, which was pretty miserable with the chill!). Neither my room nor my bathroom looked anything like the pictures on their website, but I was in the lowest room category. It was an OK place to sleep, but not worth any 'gay premium'.
